Understanding PIH vs sun tan — why the distinction matters
Skin Science · 4 min read
PIH and sun tan look similar. They behave nothing alike.
SUN TAN: Diffuse darkening on sun-exposed zones (forehead, nose, cheeks). Triggered by UV. Reverses in 3–4 weeks with consistent SPF, vitamin C (or rosehip), and gentle exfoliation.
PIH (Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation): Discrete dark spots left behind after acne, cuts, or any inflammation. Triggered by melanocyte hyper-response to skin damage. Takes 8–12 weeks to fade with kumkumadi oil, alpha arbutin, and strict SPF.
MELASMA: Symmetric patches on cheeks, forehead, or upper lip. Hormonal — triggered by pregnancy, contraceptives, thyroid changes. Requires a dermatologist. Natural actives slow it but cannot cure.
Mixing them up means using the wrong treatment for months. If you can't tell which you have, consult a dermatologist — diagnosis is the first treatment.
